Ban Single Use Plastic – Webinar
What is required to stop the flood of plastic waste entering our ecosystems?
Time & Location

About the Event
The Maastricht Climate Coalition’s demand to ban single-use plastic seems straightforward, given the municipality’s goal to be waste-free by 2030 and the public’s awareness on plastic pollution. However, such visions for Maastricht’s waste management seem unrealistic. Streets are still filled with single-use coffee cups and take away packaging, especially as the sanitary context has given the ‘to-go’ trend a strong boost. So, what is required to stop the flood of plastic waste entering our ecosystems? In this 90 minute webinar, we bring experts from different perspectives together to talk about concrete solutions for the Maastricht community. Anne Marieke Eveleens from the Great Bubble Barrier introduces us to an innovative technology to clean the Maas river. Prof Dr Yvonne van der Meer, Professor & group head Sustainability of Chemicals and Materials and Scientific co-director Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials presents cutting-edge research on new material solutions and single-use alternatives. Lastly, our third speaker (to be confirmed) updates us on the actions already taken and to be taken by the municipality and other actors to come closer to the city’s ambitious goal. After each speaker has introduced their unique perspective, you are invited to ask questions and share your own point of view and propose solutions.
