Crisiscentrum/Centre de crise: "Situation in hospitals is precarious"

The Crisiscentrum/Centre de crise press conference today focussed exclusively on the situation in the hospitals across Belgium, which has been referred to as precarious.

Marcel Van der Auwera, Diensthoofd Dringende Geneeskundige en Psychosociale Hulpverlening bij FOD Volksgezondheid, Veiligheid van de Voedselketen en Leefmilieu:

"The situation in our hospitals is very fragile. We were confronted with this in the night from Sunday to Monday after a serious fire in Brussels seriously injured several people. It was a puzzle to find a bed in intensive care for all those people."

"Today, not every hospital has intensive care beds available. Moreover, for burns we only have two places for adults and two for children. A major fire or traffic accident is enough to fill these beds. And unfortunately: an accident can happen to any of us, and at any time."

According to Van der Auwera evacuations abroad are not excluded in the coming period. Belgium has already made contact with Germany, where Belgian patients are again welcome.
