Position Summary

For West's Packaging Components team, we are seeking a self-motivated and results-oriented Director of Global Material Development to develop and execute a strategy around elastomer based materials and coatings in primary packaging materials. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advising senior management in defining West's material strategy.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • As a recognized expert, brings extensive thought leadership in defining and developing new elastomer formulations to be used as primary packaging material in medical devices for injectable drug products

  • Define and execute a multi-year strategic plan for elastomer development aligned with the packaging components strategy

  • Act as subject matter expert (SME) for all material (mainly elastomer, plastic and coatings) related questions and problems

  • Manage R&D laboratory that supports all R&D activities of the R&D Kiefernweg

  • Support and maintain the life cycle management of active elastomer formulations. This includes alternative raw materials as well as customer and operations support

  • Scientific understanding of the materials and their potential interaction with drug products

  • Stay up-to-date with trends and new materials by building up an external network with suppliers, knowledge centers and universities

  • Stay on the leading edge of the technology areas and pharma/biotech market trends

  • Define and execute a material research roadmap

  • Manage, inspire, develop and coach a team (currently a team of 5 direct reports (4 Material Managers, 1 R&D Lab Manager with 2 Lab Technicians)

Your Basic Qualifications

  • Master's in Chemistry, Material Sciences or similar

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant professional experience with 5+ years in material development, process development or similar

  • Knowledge of rubber chemistry and/or rubber processing is preferred

  • People leadership experience, whether through direct people management or by leading through projects & influence, is imporntant

  • Knowledge of analytical techniques to understand the chemistry and extractables of elastomeric formulations

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in making decisions and resolving complex porblems related to general & technical aspects of the job. Decisions made with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, policies and business practices to achieve results

  • Excellent team player, good organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication skills and capability to interface at all levels of the organization in English. German language skills are preferred (the willingness to learn is important)

  • Ability and willingness to travel globally.
