Despite increasing need for elementary school teaching staff across the Aachen region, RWTH Aachen University currently does not regard reinstating the educational sciences programme as a viable possibility. The lack of elementary school teaching staff is particularly visible in this region, with only 16 out of 70 vacant positions recently filled, of which a mere four were regulated trained teaching staff. Some proposals to make the positions more attractive include offering study programmes where vacant positions already exist, so that prospective teachers could continue residing in their university city, as well as raising primary school teachers’ wages.
