In the Spotlight: Studio Yasja
Updated: Jun 17, 2021
For this edition of In the Spotlight we put a shine on local artist Yasja Ligtelijn, humanist illustrative designer with a soft spot for murals. She tells us all about her art, her convictions, her murals, and gives us her own perspective of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine artistic landscape.
Born and raised on a houseboat on the outskirts of Amsterdam, Yasja has been living in Limburg (NL) since she was thirteen years old. She attended the Maastricht Institute of Arts - Zuyd Hogeschool from which she graduated in 2016 and is now based in Heerlen. Polyvalent in her work, her medium of predilection remains murals which offer plenty of surface to unleash her creativity and gives her the opportunity to communicate more easily and broadly with the public.
She has made several canvas paintings and murals all over Europe, her most notable ones in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine being the 2020 "Vastelaovend in Limburg" poster, and the mural "Sparkle up your Mind", painted together with her mother and artist Reggy Bruine de Bruin. The mural, atop Brasserie Mijn Streek in Heerlen, was a collaboration with Sparkle up your Mind foundation and Getting up - Street Art Fondation and was made to raise awareness about breast cancer and help funds the research towards its curing. Her most recent work "Open Up", was part of the Open Up to Rotterdam campaign organised at the occasion of the Eurovision Song Festival 2021 in Rotterdam last month.
