Nature

There were reports at the beginning of September that the first wild wolf to be spotted living in Belgium (#HechtelEksel) in a century had not been seen in a while, and there is now great concern that Naya and her cubs are dead. The question now is how that happened. Sil Janssen from Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek is convinced that the perpetrator had a weapon. "Naya was killed by hunters and buried." he states. Jan Loos of Welkom Wolf has accused the Agentschap Natuur & Bos – ANB of being guilty by default and is considering filing a complaint with the European Union - EU because the government took insufficient measures to protect the wolf and her cubs. Five possible scenarios can explain the disappearance of Naya. She left with her offspring, she died during childbirth, she was hit by a car during pregnancy, she became ill or she and her cubs were killed. Sil Janssen and Jan Loos are of the latter opinion. “In fact, I am 99 percent sure. The wolf had opponents from the start. In some forums it was openly suggested that they should be killed. And that has happened. Hunters have killed Naya." said Janssen. Source: Het Belang van Limburg Photo: RR
